God Vinayaka Panchopchar pooja

This consists of five steps – Purification (Pavitrakeeran), Sipping Water (Aachamana), Tying the Knot (ShikaBandhanam), Breath Control (Pranayama), and Super-Imposition (Nyasa).

First is the Pavitrakeeran. Take the water in your left palm and cover it with your right hand. Say the Gayatri mantra and sprinkle it over your whole body. This Upasana has maximum effect if you let the purification of the water cover your entire body.

Next is the Aachamana. Take three spoonful of water and sip it three times. With every sip say the Gayatri mantra. These three Aachamana is symbolic of three types of latent energy in the Gayatri mantra – Hreem, power of wisdom, Shreem, power of plenty, and Kleem, power.

Shika Bandhanam is the typing of the tuft of hair on the top of the head. You must touch it with wet fingers while saying the Gayathri mantra. This will awaken the Sahasrara Chakra within us. This is symbolized by the 100 petalled lotus and it is in our Brahma Randhara. If you have no hair, you can touch the top of the head with wet fingers.

Now we come to pranayama. This consists of four parts. First sit in a comfortable position and think happy thoughts. Keeps lips closed and eyes half or fully closed. Inhale from both nostrils. Chant the following – Om Bhur Bhuvah Swah and think this: I attract the power of Brahman the conscious prana shakti who is all pervading and remover of all distresses and spreads happiness. Inhale until your lungs are full. This stage is known as Pooraka.

Retain the breath inside and repeat the part of the manta tat saviturvarenyam with the feeling: The prana inside me is noble and brilliant like the sun. This is known as the antahkumbhaka. You should do the retain the breath inside for only half the period that you do the Pooraka. So, if you do Pooraka for 6 seconds, then you should retain the air inside for only 3 seconds.

Do the exhalation slowly through both nostrils. Repeat the bhargodevasya part of the mantra with the feeling: The divine prana is destroying all the sins and removing them from my body. I become fresh and powerful. This rechaka must take the same time you take for the Pooraka.

Retain your breath outside your body for the same amount of time you held it inside. This is known as the Bahya Kumbhaka. Without any air in the lungs you must recite the dhiyoyonah part of the mantra with the feeling that the Vedamata Bhagwati Gayatri is awakening your satbuddhi. This part of the pranayama you must do thrice. It removes the blemishes of the body, speech, and mind.

Nyasa is superimposing the satvic power of Gayatri in various parts of the body. Join the thumb and index finger of the right hand and dip them in water. Now, touch them to the distinct parts of the body where you lock the satvic power. Chant the Gayatri mantra and touch the organs such as:

  • Om Bhur Bhuvah Swah – head
  • Tat Savituh – both eyes
  • Varenyam – both ears
  • Bhargo – mouth
  • Devasya – throat
  • Dheemahi – heart
  • Dhiyoyonah – naval
  • Prachodayat – hands and feet

Begin the worship

Now we begin the worship. First, we invoke the mother earth. We worship the motherland and the whole planet earth. This is followed by the ishta deva poojanam. The incense sticks are lit and invite the Maha shakti Gayatri to the altar.

Show the lamp to the Lord Ganesha. Now, offer the dhoop sticks. Put the Sindoor tilak on the forehead. You can either apply the tilak to the forehead or apply to the entire body. If you apply to the whole body, it is known as Chola. This is done according to Shiv Purana. You should offer Chola when you have Lord Ganesha on your main door. Also, put raw unbroken rice on the tilak.
