One to be venerated in all corners of the country is mother of all the world – Goddess Durga, almost as much as Lord Shiva and Vishnu. She is considered to be the manifestation of all potencies of the universe.  Mother durga is fierce form of the goddess. It is said that when it was no longer in the might of the gods to defeat mighty demon Mahishasur  (Buffalo demon); then all together venerated the primordial Power; all potencies of gods took the figure of a female. This divine goddess was given divine weapons by all the gods. She can vanish all bad path from this trait, name Durga comes. The Goddess endowed with all the powers killed so many demons, like Mahishasur , Shumbh and Nishumbh etc.

Mother’s forms are many – Ambika, Chamunda (The Fierce), Goddess Kali, Uma. On one hand she is the destroyer of fierce negative forces like Chand, Mund, Mahishasur, Shumbh, Nishumbh etc., on the other, She nourishes and nurtures in the form of Shakambhara (nutrition of vegetation world), Kalyani (doing benefit wholesomely), Bhavani ( Who brings forth manifestation) and such serene forms; fierce She is for dark and tyrant forces and cheering She is to her virtuous devotees, who are genial.
